Natural Ways to Manage Fleas?

Most pet owners will confirm that at some point they have had issues with pesky fleas. Not only are they hard to spot at the start, but they multiply so quick that once you do realise you have a problem, it could be as far as an infestation. No one has the time to be checking their pets daily for the off chance you may catch the first flea and prevent an infestation, so what can you do to prevent these pesky pests from entering your home?

In this post, I will cover different ways to prevent fleas becoming a problem in diet and in the house. These methods will differ from dog to cat, so please don't mix these methods between animals, as there are some methods that dogs can handle that cats can't and vice versa.

Diet

There are natural products out there that can be introduced into your pets diet that not only helps ward away fleas, but also provide extra beneficial nutrients to your pets body.

Along with the use of these products, there is one basic topical method you should do to help rid your pet of fleas:

Comb your pet daily once you know there are fleas on your pet. This helps catch the fleas off your pet and removes them before they can lay anymore eggs. The most effective way to do this is to get a bowl of hot water mixed with washing up liquid and a roll of tissue, sit with your pet and comb through their fur, dunking any fleas on your comb straight into the soapy water.

The soapy water will encase the fleas and suffocate them, killing them instantly.

Neem is very effective for combating a flea infestation. Neem contains properties that make it a great pest repellant and will kill the fleas after long exposure. It is a completely natural ingredient that won't harm your pet in any way and will actually boost them as it is anti-septic, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial. This product leaves no odour on your pet after washing, and boosts their skin and coat. I have used the Neem Therape Shampoo before when my Cats had fleas, and during washing you could see the fleas jumping off the Cat to get away from the neem, so it is highly effective in use.

House

Where your pet has fleas, you can be sure your home does too. There are different methods for management and removal, but there are not a lot of household products that are natural to combat fleas, we stock one product we have tried ourselves for combating fleas, but a lot of others include harsh chemicals. There are some things you can do to manage an infestation along with the products:

  • Hoover your carpets daily. This will suction up fleas into your hoover and help hugely with managing a flea infestation. After hoovering take your hoover outside, remove the bag and throw it away. This will minimise any chance of the fleas finding their way out of the hoover and back into your house.
  • Wash all bedding, clothes, blankets etc. If your not dealing with an infestation, this will only need to be done once to rid these items of fleas. If you are dealing with an infestation, I would recommend washing them regularly and keeping them somewhere out of reach of your pets and of fleas.
  • Steam clean carpets. Using a steam cleaner for your carpets will boil the fleas alive, which will kill them off. This should only need to be done once, but if the infestations persists, you can do this as part of a regular cleaning schedule to manage or prevent infestation.
  • Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. This can be used on carpets to rid your home of fleas, as it causes dehydration to the fleas and kills them. It is recommended to use a mask and gloves when doing this, and to ALWAYS use a food grade option, as the non food grade option can get messy and irritate your eyes and throat, aswell as not be healthy if your pet consumes it. Apply a thin layer to your carpet and leave for 2 days before hoovering. It is crucial to make sure it is applied in thin layers so it doesn't cause problems or break your hoover when cleaning.
